Third World Series of Poker Bracelet for the UK

Richard Ashby, a Full Tilt Poker pro and high stakes players scooped Event 21 the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud after outlasting 407 other players for the $140k first prize and the UK’s third bracelet of the 2010 Series.

This was Ashby’s first bracelet in a format he is clearly at home with having won the Seven-Card Stud EM European Poker Champion in Baden in late 2009.

“I like the game and I’ve had good success in it. Maybe I should play it a little more.”

Ashby was modest after the win and most of the poker community know him better from playing in the high stakes at Full Tilt Poker. This was a surprise both to him and to others around with players like Sorel Mizzi and Christine Pietsch who was looking to become the 16^th female WSOP bracelet winner in her first World Series of Poker event.

Ashby from Watford is the third UK player to bring home a bracelet after just 21 events and joins Praz Bansi and James Dempsey in flying the flag for UK poker. He defeated four other bracelet winners on the way including Sorel Mizzi who was chip leader heading into the final day. Many expected Mizzi to win the event but ultimately didn’t have enough to get past Darren Shebell who came third in the tournament.

Ashby was in a great position heads up after knocking out Dan Heimiller in fourth place and then Darren Shebell in third. When the tournament went heads-up Ashby was particularly impressive taking little time to dismantle the chip stack of Christine Pietsch.

With many more event still to come and James Dempsey going well in the $10k Omaha/8 there are high hopes for more bracelets to be winging their way back to the UK before the World Series of Poker is over for another year.
