Sammy Farha Eclipses James Dempsey to win Event#25

WSOPSammy Farha famously lost heads-up against Chris Moneymaker in the tournament that brought poker to the masses and made online poker the game it is today – the 2003 Main Event. Many in poker will thank Farha for this loss but he was back with a vengeance as he defeated James Dempsey, the English winner of Event#9 in this World Series of Poker.

The UK has already taken down three bracelets this year with Dempsey, Praz Bansi and Richard Ashby all picking up bracelets. Dempsey was trying to make it number four for our little country whilst picking up his second to mark a breakthrough World Series of Poker. Farha had alternative views though as he ground down Dempsey over three and a half hours of Omaha 8 or better heads up action.

Farha picked up his third bracelet after both players were all in pre-flop with marginal holdings. Farha flopped a pair of fours that somehow held as the board bricked out for Dempsey despite his four over cards. In the end with three 10s on the board Farha’s four was meaningless but his J9 was marginally higher than Dempsey’s J8. It was a long time coming though for Sammy Farha who rivered aces full of kings to cripple Dempsey on the hand before the decider.

Dempsey held the chip lead at least twice during the battle but was unable to press home his advantage. He played spectacularly well whilst under severe pressure from the old timer and was unlucky to lose to the rivered full house of Farha who took home the bracelet and first prize of $488,237 in this $10,000 buy in event.

In good news for the UK, an Englishman has qualified for the Tournament of Champions by winning the online qualifier and will now sit down with 26 of the world’s best poker players on June 27th to try and win one of the hardest bracelets of them all.
