Right after the finish of the 2009 WSOP, the Poker Players Alliance are heading straight back to work. The PPA are a non-profit membership organisation comprised of both offline and online poker players from around the United States. They have joined together in order to promote the game and protect American’s right to play poker in all its many forms.
The PPA National Poker Week takes place on July 19th through to July 25th, and the organisation plan to spend the week promoting their cause by sending a group of poker pros and State Directors directly to Washing D.C to talk to members of Congress.
The association will also be sending a petition to President Obama to ask for his support in making the game of poker exempt from the Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act. Players can sign the petition online.
One of the pros heading off to Washing D.C is Howard Lederer. He says, “Restricting what we can do online in the privacy of our own home is a slippery slope, which is why I am coming to Washington for National Poker Week – to tell my members of Congress to protect my rights.”
The PPA will also be hosting a charity poker tournament on July 21st, to benefit the USO and the Malone House at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Alongside the poker pros, PPA’s State Directors, and members of congress who are taking part in the tournament will be wounded servicemen and women.
