A European Poker Tour tournament in Germany was hit yesterday in a Wild West armed robbery with the villainous robbers making away with over £720,000 live on air. Thankfully nobody was killed or seriously injured in the robbery, the only thing damaged was the pride of the German security force.
In a bold and audacious move a team of armed robbers brought the feeling of danger and lawlessness back to poker. Armed with guns and machetes the robbers were very unwelcome guests in Berlin’s luxury Grand Hyatt. An unnamed security guard almost subdued one of the attacker before a robber with a machete persuaded him to relinquish his grip on the other robber. The group of six men fled the scene after stuffing bags with €800,000 in cash.
Whilst the getaway may not have been on horseback and nobody was drinking bourbon the successful robbery brought back memories of a wilder more carefree game of poker unrecognisable from the modern day internet and avatar dominated poker world. When an online screen name is synonymous with poker and even Doyle Brunson has an online poker room it is refreshing to see that the game has not lost its roots completely.
As the robbers made away with the money, security guards hot on their heels, rumours abound that they were already ringing Hollywood agents to sell the movie rights. In three years time when The German Heist wins best picture you can say you heard it here first.
